World Oceans Day: Small scale fishers from around the world call on governments to act

M’Bour, 8 June 2022.

World Oceans Day reminds everyone of the important role that the oceans play in our daily lives. The aim of the day is to mobilise and unite the world’s population around a vision for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans. This year, the Day will highlight the 2022 theme: “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean.

On this occasion, artisanal fisheries organisations from Africa, including CAOPA, Asia, Central America, South America and Europe have issued a strong call to action in which they ask governments to address the lack of scientific, transparent and participatory fisheries management; address threats posed by pollution, competition for space and resources by other blue economy industries; and invest in long-term resource management, ecosystem restoration and innovations introduced by fishing communities.

Representatives of artisanal fishing organisations will be present at the Oceans Conference in Lisbon from 27 June to 1 July 2022. This will be an opportunity for them to discuss, with the decision makers and civil society present, the concrete proposals detailed in this call to action.
