The United Nations General Assembly declared the year 2022 “International Year of Small-Scale Fisheries and Aquaculture” (IYAFA 2022). FAO is the lead agency responsible for celebrating the year in collaboration with other relevant organizations and agencies of the United Nations system.
IYAFA 2022 is an important act of recognition for the millions of small-scale fishers, fish farmers and fishery workers who provide safe and nutritious food to billions of people and contribute to achieving the Zero Hunger Agenda.
Artisanal fisheries and aquaculture also deserve attention as they are essential to the livelihoods of millions of people and play an important role in responsible resource management and healthy ecosystems.
