From the Frontline to the Market: Antónia Adama Djaló, Symbol of Resilience and Success

Antónia Adama Djaló, a 65-year-old woman, has carved out a distinguished reputation in the fields of accounting, marketing, fish processing, and cashew nut exportation. She embarked on her professional journey as an accountant at the Ministry of Defense, a career that swiftly led her to an illuminating turning point.

While still serving as a military officer and civil servant, Antónia was entitled to receive cartons of fish at the end of each month. Motivated by a brilliant opportunity, she seized the chance to sell the portions of fish her friends provided her. She quickly discovered her knack for effortlessly moving these goods in the markets, laying the foundation for her future enterprise.

The inception of the National Women’s Association for Economic Activities (AMAE) of Guinea-Bissau in 1992, of which she is the president, was not overly challenging due to the abundance of fish at that time. Her adeptness at sales was bolstered by the trust her friends had in her to market their fish. Over the years, this activity became a central pillar of her life, motivating her to persist steadfastly.

The trust of her friends, coupled with the opportunity to make ends meet in a Guinea-Bissau where salaries were modest, have always fueled her determination. Her entrepreneurial journey started humbly, with a mere 75 Pesos in her pocket, a sum that allowed her to purchase half a ton of average-quality fish.

Today, Antónia faces the mounting challenge of dwindling resources and the lack of adequate conservation infrastructure. Despite this, her business has brought significant changes to her life.

Social impact

The impact of this endeavor on Antónia’s life is noteworthy. She has been able to fund her children’s education through her efforts. Her involvement has also garnered national and international recognition, bestowing a certain influence upon her.

Furthermore, Mrs. Antónia Adama Djaló holds the position of Vice-President of the African Confederation of Artisanal Fisheries Organizations (CAOPA) and concurrently serves as the Coordinator of Women’s Programs for the continental organization.

She firmly believes that this activity, when “properly managed,” could help numerous families enhance their living conditions.

Beyond financial aspects, Antónia takes pride in reshaping the perception of her profession and elevating its status in the eyes of her generation and beyond. Her ability to engage with diverse individuals, her cheerful disposition, and attentive listening skills are traits that set her apart.

As a woman entrepreneur, Antónia imparts sage advice. She emphasizes the importance of “not succumbing to discouragement, listening to others, and carrying out one’s work with passion.” She believes in the power of forgiveness and transcending conflicts to move forward.

If she could turn back time, Antónia would have wished to embark on this endeavor sooner. Her present goal is to bolster the autonomy and prosperity of women in this sector. Thus, Antónia Adama Djaló embodies perseverance, audacity, and the ability to transform challenges into flourishing opportunities.
