In this International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture, CAOPA together with fisheries organizations from the Pacific, Central and South America, Asia and Europe, have identified five areas of action for governments to work with their countries’ small-scale fishing communities to ensure a sustainable future for these communities by 2030:
For the implementation of these priorities, anchored in the FAO Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries, the establishment of a permanent dialogue between governments, and with fishing communities, is essential. We therefore support the FAO in its efforts to maintain mechanisms for dialogue between governments, with the active participation of fishers, on the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries.
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14.b calls on states to secure access to marine resources and markets for small-scale fisheries. We call for urgent action to address key challenges to ensure that small-scale fisheries are protected and restored and continue to contribute to people’s livelihoods, health, culture and well-being.
In June 2022, artisanal fishers from Africa, the Pacific, Latin America, Asia and Europe identified five areas of action for governments to provide a sustainable future for these communities by 2030.
The 35th session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) will place special emphasis on women and men in artisanal fisheries (SSF). Artisanal fisheries call on them to support them with concrete actions and to continue the dialogue on the implementation of the Guidelines for Sustainable Artisanal Fisheries.
